Operation Eating to the Back of the Pantry

Bloggies:

I don't know about you but I feel like I'm always going grocery shopping and spending a ton of money! To look at my hauls you'd think I have nothing in my pantry or fridge. So. Not. True.

And yet there I am - it's almost like I'm hoarding food. I think part of the issue comes from the fact that I'm always coming up with new things I want to cook and heading out to buy the necessary ingredients. Either that or while walking around the grocery store something strikes my fancy!

Loads of money later my pantry and fridge are bursting at the seams!!!

So I've come up with a challenge for myself this week - I call it "Operation Eating to the Back of the Pantry!"

It's fairly self-explanatory - instead of loading up on groceries I'm going to attempt to cook all my meals using ingredients I already have in my home (don't worry that grocery picture is months old - I'm not cheating here).

By the end of the week I hope to have:

1) Learnt that I don't always need to go out and buy more groceries
2) Saved money
3) Challenged myself to cook "new" meals

Are you like me - do you buy groceries even when you have a full kitchen cupboard?

Won't you join me in the challenge!?! :o)

Look for pictures documenting my progress - coming soon to a blog near you!!!

I so do the same thing. I didn't realize what we actually had on hand until the husband starting moving things around. Do 2 people really need 3 half full boxes of the same pasta?

Ugh, I'm an awful grocery shopper!! I've tried sticking to a list, but it doesn't work. I also only ever bring two canvas bags so I won't be tempted to buy more volume than that. But I always ended leaving with a couple plastic bags with the overflow :P At least I eat every little bit that I buy. I don't eat out much, and pack aaalll my lunches, so I like to think it evens out :)

We do this every now and then. It starts off diffult, but then becomes a fun challenge! Have fun getting creative with what you find!

Susan,

I'm usually pretty good with the list. Problem is I'm always buying more in an attempt to experiment.

That Pink Girl,

I think the big challenge is going to be trying to stay away from carbs. Eeek!

(Found you from Mara's blog)

I am the same way! Every month or 2 I'll do the same thing, instead of what I *want* to eat, I look at what I have and see what I can make.

Cans for comments = awesome!

Back when I was a grown up, living on my own, doing my own grocery shopping for my own pantry (I'm so over dramatic), I would definitely purchase items I didn't necessarily need, but either wanted to try or was going to use for a new recipe. I would definitely try and limit these purchases to only a few items a week though, so as not to break the bank. I was also famous for stocking up when something was on a killer sale (which I don't think is a bad thing). But there were times my cupboards, fridge, and freezer would be bursting at the seems, and I would work on finishing up the last of this and that. It went in cycles, because I do love having a stocked pantry so I can whip up anything my heart desires :D
